Latest Unite Construction Rank And File Newsletter........

The "Unite Construction Rank And File Group" are the group headed by the committee that was elected at Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, London on the 13th August 2011. Working together with the Site Worker magazine. To receive these weekly news updates directly to your email follow the LINK and join the group.

All very ‘Civil’ and very ‘Disobedient’

The fantastic actions and civil disobedience across the country claimed it’s first scalp this week with MJN Colston announcing it will stay within the JIB agreement.

This Wednesday in London 4OO construction workers took the fight against the break up of the JIB to Kings X station. There were lots of new faces and some young sparks fantastic! Dave Smith kept us entertained introducing music, rappers, and Indian drummers!

Speakers included Unite construction officials, Alan Keys, John Mcdonnel MP, and Mike Abbot a veteran striker of the 1972 strike. Trade Unions showed their solidarity in the form of the RMT, Unison and PCS. One entrance gate was blocked, then it was on to the main Euston Road to another gate, where we blocked the road.

But the highlight of the morning was when we stormed on to the main ‘King X Station concourse’ letting the public know about our dispute.

Here UCATT General Secretary candidate [who has been on every demo] Mick Dooley gave a thunderous speech, quoting from ‘the ragged trousered philanthropist’. Jerry Hicks rounded up the day with another ‘barnstormer’ and the latest Site worker went like hot cakes.

Also on Wednesday there was success in Liverpool. The JMU Spie Mathew Hall site had been leafleted the previous couple of days to let the sparks on the job know that there would be a protest. This proved well worth while as the sparks refused to cross the ‘demo line’.

This successful tactic needs to be copied by the rest of us as we ramp up the pressure.

70 sparks held a rank and file meeting in Liverpool last night to decide the next steps and many said they will be coming to the Manchester rank and file meeting tomorrow.

Protests’ ‘demo’s’ ‘site invasions’ direct action and “civil disobedience” has brought us a right result with MJN Colston being forced to back off, but we still have the other 7 in our ‘sites’.

So Bernard, how about an early Xmas present by giving us a ballot? And we don’t mean Xmas 2012! Let’s join the 2 million public sector workers in on strike against cuts on 30th November.

Keep on inundating Unites National Construction Officer Bernard McAulay with emails bernard.mcaulay@unitetheunion.org demanding a date for the ballot.
